 Ocean Circulation: Theory and Models

PROGRAM 

This course is offered to upper level undergraduate and graduate students. Students will gain exposure to fundamental concepts in ocean circulation theory and modeling. Theory classes will be complemented with laboratory classes in which the students will have hands on experience in the use of the ROMS (Regional Ocean Model System) model. Course topics will include: rotating and non-rotating waves, frictional effects in geophysical systems, quasi-geostrophic theory, wind-driven ocean circulation, thermocline theory, the meridional overturning circulation. No prior experience in ocean modeling is required.
